The Great Outdoors
At Rupert House, Outdoor Learning plays a vital role in our curriculum, encouraging children to explore, discover and connect with the natural world around them.
Our dedicated Outdoor Learning area is set beside the school playing fields, in a beautiful woodland environment where children are inspired to play, interact, and learn about nature. The space features a pond, vegetable planters, and a covered outdoor classroom - perfect for all-weather exploration.
Nestled amongst the trees, children can enjoy a range of enriching activities. These include an open fire for toasting marshmallows or bread, a bug hotel, and new tepees and a swing – generously donated by the Friends of Rupert House in 2025. Sessions are led by fully trained Outdoor Learning specialists who ensure that every visit is safe, engaging, and educational.
Outdoor Exploration Beyond the School Grounds
In the Prep School, Outdoor Learning often extends beyond the school site. Children enjoy a wide variety of experiences, such as riverside walks along the Thames, woodland hikes up Path Hill, litter picking in Henley town centre, and visits to Mill Meadows, including the local play park and bandstand.
We recently introduced a Forest and Survival Skills Club for pupils in Years 5 and 6. This optional extra-curricular activity provides hands-on experiences in outdoor living and bushcraft, supported by specialist staff.
Adventure Trips and Residential Experiences
Outdoor adventures are a highlight of the school year for children in Years 3 to 6, with trips designed to promote resilience, teamwork and independence:
- Years 3 & 4 take part in exciting residentials at PGL—one of the UK’s leading outdoor education providers.
- Year 5 embark on a Bushcraft adventure, where they camp out and learn survival skills in a safe and supportive setting.
- Year 6 enjoy a residential visit to France, exploring the Battlefields of the Somme. During the Summer Term, they also spend a memorable day of adventure on Shiplake Island and take part in weekly river sports sessions. These include paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, and rowing – providing a fantastic opportunity to develop confidence, teamwork and water safety skills on the River Thames.
Why Outdoor Learning Matters
Learning outdoors offers children the opportunity to build confidence, independence and resilience. It supports mental wellbeing, encourages risk-taking in a secure environment, and fosters a deep appreciation for the natural world.
From Nursery upwards, Rupert House pupils benefit from regular outdoor learning experiences that are enjoyable, creative, challenging, and adventurous - helping them develop valuable life skills in a setting that inspires curiosity and joy.
