Year 2 Step Back in Time at Milestones Museum

Year 2 enjoyed a fantastic day out at Milestones Museum, stepping back in time to discover what life was like during the Victorian era.

The children experienced a Victorian school lesson, gaining an insight into how education worked over 100 years ago. To celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, they also took part in a range of hands-on activities using authentic Victorian artefacts.

From buying ingredients with Victorian pennies and carefully weighing them using traditional weights and scales, to posting letters in a world without email (shock, horror!), the children immersed themselves in the everyday experiences of Victorian life. They even helped new neighbours discover which shops they would need to furnish their homes.

The visit was a wonderful opportunity to bring our Victorian topic to life, allowing the children to explore history in an engaging and memorable way. And, of course, no trip would be complete without a visit to the sweet shop - which proved to be a definite highlight!

I have always believed that some of the most important parts of school life happen beyond the pages of an exercise book, whether on the sports field, at a swimming gala, exploring the world outside or simply through a conversation when a child needs a little extra support. My teaching career has taken me from Surrey to Beijing and back again, before I joined Rupert House in 2022. As a class teacher and Head of Prep Boys I particularly enjoy getting to know the children as individuals and supporting them both academically and pastorally as they make their way through the school. For me, the great joy of teaching is seeing children discover what they are capable of and develop the confidence, independence and resilience that will stay with them long after they leave the classroom.
