Wishford Athletics Event

Palmer Park Stadium, Reading – Tuesday 2nd June

Despite an ominous weather forecast predicting a day of persistent rain, the Wishford Athletics Event at Palmer Park Stadium on 2nd June turned into a truly superb occasion.

Apart from a brief spell of light drizzle lasting no more than ten minutes, conditions were almost ideal, providing the perfect backdrop for a day of energetic competition and outstanding performances.

At 9:00am, 45 pupils from Years 3 to 6, both boys and girls, departed school by coach, full of excitement and anticipation. Upon arrival at the stadium, the team quickly settled in, setting up their base and receiving final instructions on their events. The atmosphere was electric as the competition began, and it soon became clear that this would be a memorable and successful day for everyone involved.

Throughout the event, every child demonstrated exceptional commitment, determination, and sportsmanship. Whether competing in running, jumping, or throwing disciplines, the pupils performed at or above their personal bests, showcasing the benefits of their preparation and teamwork. Their effort, resilience, and enthusiasm were evident in every race and field event, making the school immensely proud.

One of the highlights away from the track and field came in the Tug-of-War competition, where our teams showed tremendous strength and unity, earning well-deserved bragging rights and adding to the day’s enjoyment.

There were also several outstanding individual and team performances worth special recognition:

  • Olive G delivered a remarkable performance, securing double gold in both the 60m and 600m races.
  • In the 60m sprint, Henry G and Quinn impressed with gold and silver medals, respectively.
  • Sophia S continued her incredible form by winning gold in the 80m, setting a new Wishford Athletics record.
  • Teddy M was another standout performer, achieving double gold in the 600m and high jump, the latter also a new Wishford Athletics record.
  • The long jump saw exceptional results from Sophia S, who set a new Wishford Athletics record by 28cm!, and Bessie E, who claimed silver.
  • Thomas D flew to a distance of 3m 41cm, claiming silver in the long jump.
  • Sylvia S soared highest in the Year 5 high jump to claim gold, while Lotte G also performed strongly to take bronze.
  • George B-V and Juliet T took home gold in the vortex throw, with Georgina W adding to the success by claiming bronze.
  • In the relay events, the Year 4 boys and Year 6 girls’ teams both claimed gold in the 4x100m relays, while the Year 4 girls team earned an excellent silver, showcasing fantastic teamwork and baton transitions.

This keeps the achievements flowing logically while ensuring all performances are highlighted clearly.

Beyond the medals and records, the true success of the day lay in the collective spirit and enjoyment shown by all participants. Every child contributed to the team effort, and their positivity and encouragement of one another embodied the values of Rupert House school sport at its best.

The final team standings reflected a strong all-round performance:

  • Girls: 1st Place
  • Boys: 4th Place
  • Overall: 3rd Place

In summary, the Wishford Athletics Event was a tremendous success. Blessed with favourable weather and driven by outstanding pupil effort, it was a day filled with achievement, teamwork, and pride. All children should be incredibly proud of their performances and the way they represented the school.
