National Numeracy Day

Our school community came together to celebrate National Numeracy Day with a fantastic range of engaging, practical and creative maths activities across all year groups, all centred around this year's national theme of 'Count on Your Community'.

Reception pupils enjoyed hands-on learning through team games using counters and dice. These activities supported early counting, number recognition and turn-taking, helping to build confidence in a fun and collaborative environment.

In Year 1, pupils explored grouping and sharing by organising their entire class community into different configurations. They investigated the factors of 16 and practised dividing 16, including exploring remainders, bringing abstract concepts to life in a highly visual and active way. They also discussed the many ways numbers are used in our everyday lives within the local community. The children shared ideas such as door numbers, bus numbers, house addresses, and how numbers are used in clubs, sports teams, and shops. This helped them to see how important numeracy skills are beyond the classroom.

Year 2 took their learning outdoors, transforming the school lawn into a giant human clockface. Pupils positioned themselves to represent hours and discussed time in a practical, memorable context, reinforcing their understanding of both analogue clocks and intervals.

Year 4 focused on real-life application of maths through a series of money-based problem-solving tasks. This work linked directly to preparations for our upcoming school May Fair, helping pupils develop budgeting, calculation and decision-making skills in a meaningful context.

Meanwhile, Year 5 and Year 6 ventured into Henley town centre to carry out surveys and traffic counts. Pupils collected and analysed real data, developing their understanding of statistics while also engaging with their local community and considering how maths is used in everyday situations.

It was a brilliant day that showcased the importance of numeracy across all areas of life, with pupils demonstrating enthusiasm, curiosity and teamwork throughout.
