Year 6 inspired by glass art

We were delighted to welcome Kate Courtney-Taylor to speak with our Year 6 pupils about her work as an artist.

She shared her inspiring career journey from studying Physics to becoming a professional artist. Mrs Courtney-Taylor offered fascinating insights into the creative processes behind her remarkable glass sculptures.

Speaking about the inspirations that shape her art, she demonstrated how artistic expression can be used to explore personal themes and communicate ideas. The children also engaged in thoughtful discussions about how art can be integrated into the environment and how it connects with other disciplines, including mathematics and science.

Another key theme of the session was collaboration. Mrs Courtney-Taylor highlighted how the work of other artists can inform, inspire, and complement one’s own practice. She reminded the pupils that from the earliest cave paintings to the present day, there is no “right” or “wrong” in art. Mistakes can spark creativity and lead to exciting new possibilities. Exhibitions, she noted, offer valuable opportunities to encounter diverse styles and subjects.

To conclude the workshop, the children created paper stencils and took them outdoors, using flour to explore concepts of positive and negative space within the school grounds.

We are extremely grateful to Mrs Courtney-Taylor for her time and for the creative energy she brought into our classroom.
