Year 6 step back in time at The Trenchard Museum
The Year 6 children had a wonderful time at the Trenchard Museum at RAF Halton on Tuesday, learning more about the First World War, which they have been studying this term with Mr Armitage.
Splitting into smaller groups, they learned about life at home during the war (sending parcels, writing letters - and them being sensored from the troops - and the vital role that women played), the kit and food the soldiers would have carried, worn and eaten, how planes were constructed and the importance of precise engineering, and then the weapons used by British soldiers in training and combat. With the museum also being a treasure trove of military history up to modern times, the children were even able to sit in the cockpit of a Gnat jet (of Red Arrow fame) and wear a pilot's helmet.
Mr Armitage also shared the extraordinary fact that his Grandfather, who was an officer in the Green Howards, had visited RAF Halton 95 years beforehand in 1931, and may well have stood on the same spot as the museum!
