Summer Maths Week at Rupert House

There was certainly no shortage of numbers, puzzles and mathematical thinking at Rupert House as we celebrated the joy of Maths this week.

With an already busy end-of-term schedule, staff embraced the challenge of finding creative ways to weave mathematics into the school day, from early morning activities and breaks between rehearsals to maths packs for pupils attending the Kenton. The result was a week full of enthusiasm, curiosity and problem-solving across every year group.

Each day of the week had its own mathematical theme, allowing pupils to explore a wide range of concepts:

  • Monday – Number and Counting
  • Tuesday – Calculation
  • Wednesday – Fractions
  • Thursday – Measurement and Geometry
  • Friday – Statistics

The activities were carefully tailored to each year group. In EYFS, children practised counting on, making halves and sorting and grouping objects, while older pupils tackled increasingly challenging concepts such as Roman numerals, written multiplication and division, fraction equivalence and even the Pythagorean theorem.

One of the week's highlights came in Year 6, where pupils ventured into the fascinating world of binary code and senary (base-six) counting, discovering that numbers can be represented in many different ways.

Another memorable activity took place in Year 3, where, as part of Summer Maths Week, the children headed down to the Outdoor Classroom to represent different mathematical problems using only natural materials they could find around them. Working collaboratively, the pupils demonstrated great creativity and resilience as they created a wide range of problems involving all four operations and fractions. The activity was a wonderful reminder that mathematics can be explored and enjoyed far beyond the classroom.

Elsewhere, pupils estimated angles, investigated pie charts and line graphs, found the mean of data sets and explored the mathematics hidden within everyday life.

Summer Maths Week provided a wonderful opportunity to show that mathematics is far more than calculations on a page. Through games, investigations and practical challenges, pupils developed their reasoning skills, worked collaboratively and, above all, had fun.

A huge thank you goes to all the staff for their flexibility, creativity and willingness to embrace the week's activities, and to the pupils for approaching every challenge with such enthusiasm. Maths is truly everywhere, and this special week reminded us just how exciting and engaging the subject can be.
