Making £5 grow!
This term, our Year 6 children took part in an exciting entrepreneurial journey.
With just a £5 loan from the school, each child teamed up with one or two classmates to create a small business. The initiative was designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and financial literacy -all while having fun.
Working in groups of up to three, the children combined their funds to maximise their buying power. Together, they developed a business idea, purchased resources or materials, and worked hard to build and promote their product or service.
The project culminated in a lively 'Make £5 Grow' Fair on Friday 13th June, where they showcased and sold their products to the rest of the school. The Year 6 parents were invited to attend and support the budding entrepreneurs as they put their hard work into action!
The project wrapped up on Thursday 19th June when each group presented their business journey, products, profits, and key reflections. This gave the children a to chance to evaluate what worked, what they might do differently next time, and celebrate their successes.
Throughout the term, aspects of English and Maths lessons were dedicated to supporting the project. Children practised persuasive writing for advertising, created posters and promotional material, and developed business plans. These plans helped them consider costs, pricing, and projected profits - giving them a real-world application for classroom skills.
After counting (and recounting!) their funds the children finished the project with a fantastic total of £969.11. The £135 that was loaned to the 27 children was returned to the school, meaning they had a whopping £834.11 to spend!
The children then went about deciding which charity they would like to donate some money to, alongside a lovely end of year treat for themselves to congratulate them on their hard work. In previous years, this has included a cinema trip or a lively water fight with pizza delivered to school.
The project proved to be more than just a lesson in business - it was a memorable experience full of problem-solving, teamwork, and turning small beginnings into big ideas.
