Celebrating National Numeracy Day with a focus on money

On Wednesday 21st May, we proudly celebrated National Numeracy Day, with this year’s theme centred around money.
Across the school, children engaged in a range of creative, practical, and challenging activities designed to develop their understanding of money in fun and meaningful ways.
In Nursery, the youngest learners created stunning coin collages using real pennies. They then counted the coins in their artwork and sorted 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins by colour, shape, size and value - an excellent hands-on introduction to money concepts.
Reception children brought their role-play Farm Shop to life by designing price tags for items and using coins to match the correct amounts. This playful approach to using money helped them build confidence with basic coin recognition and counting.
In Year 1, pupils explored how different combinations of coins can be used to make the same amount of money, deepening their understanding of pounds and pence. Year 2 took it a step further, practising column addition with money to improve their accuracy and fluency.
Year 4 tackled more complex problems using all four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—to solve real-world money challenges. Meanwhile, in Year 6, students explored exchange rates and plotted them on graphs to compare currencies. They even delved into compound interest, learning to convert interest rates into decimals and substitute values into formulas - impressive financial literacy skills for primary-aged pupils!
As part of the celebrations, Years 4 and 5 also took part in an exciting Times Tables Rock Stars competition, where parallel classes competed to earn the most points. A big congratulations to 4MR in Year 4 and 5D in Year 5 for coming out on top in their respective year groups!
This engaging and educational day was a fantastic way to bring numeracy to life across the school, showing our pupils that maths is not only useful - it's fun!
