Yellow May on the menu

The members of the school food council met with our catering team this week to discuss the current lunch and snack menus.

They talked about the fact that it is 'Yellow May' so Chef Barry is incorporating healthy yellow fruit and veg into meals and snacks this month. All the children tasted new items that he had prepared including a delicious vegan banana bread superfood smoothie and sugar-free lemon poppyseed muffins.

The food council members gave feedback on the current menu which they had collated from their year groups and provided suggestions for next term. Examples included:

  • Fewer courgettes
  • More pasta options on the salad bar
  • More availability of ketchup
  • More cheese on top of the Shepherd's Pie
  • Bigger/more filling snacks

They were also told that Fruity Friday will be implemented to cut down on the amount of sugar on the menu one day a week. The children were very happy with this and discussed which fruit they'd like to see as their dessert on Fridays as an alternative to a traditional pudding.

The school food council will meet again in the new school academic year.
