Art

Art at Rupert House is primarily an enjoyable, valuable experience.  It follows the National Curriculum Guidelines and gives our pupils the chance to work as individuals, in pairs, in groups and as part of a class.  The children are encouraged to express ideas and feelings, record observations and design and make images and artefacts.

Art is a visual language and needs to be acquired.  The children learn about how ideas, feelings and meaning can be communicated visually using the six main visual elements:

  • Pattern
  • Texture
  • Colour
  • Line
  • Tone
  • Shape, Form and Space

The children have the chance to learn about the work of other artists, craftspeople and designers, looking at drawing, print making, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, graphic design and architecture from our cultural heritage.

They also have the opportunity to look at work in a variety of genres and styles from the locality, past and present, Western and Non-Western Cultures.  The acquisition of skills to use materials, tools and techniques is also an important element in the teaching of Art at Rupert House School.

The main purpose, however, is to encourage the natural abilities that every child possesses and to kindle in them a lifetime’s enjoyment of creating and self expression.
