FOREST SCHOOL AT RUPERT HOUSE

Rupert House was one of the first schools in Oxfordshire to set up a Forest School and children in our Nursery and Reception classes have been enjoying weekly sessions at our Forest School site for six years under the supervision of our three trained Forest School leaders. Forest School is all about learning through play and exploration since research shows that children learn best from first hand experiences. The concept of Forest Schools was developed in Scandinavia and operates on the principle that children of the 21st Century have an innate need for direct contact with nature but alarmingly few opportunities to achieve this. The principle has since been recognised and incorporated into the Early Years Foundation Stage. Forest School sessions are practical and a lot of fun! They emphasise the development of self-esteem, communication and social skills, personal responsibility and citizenship; all skills which feedback positively into the classroom. The EYFS provision at Rupert House was deemed to be outstanding when we were inspected in 2011 and inspectors commented that, ‘The curriculum is rich and diverse with opportunities for imaginative and investigative experiences. Planned outdoor experiences, where children are able to explore the natural environment, are of particular note ….’ Come and see for yourself. The next open morrning is on Friday 25th May. Please call the School for details.

On Friday, we were fortunate to have a visit from Ryan Davies and Rebecca Holliday who have just cycled 16,800 miles from Henley to New Zealand! They brought in their bikes, kit bags and tent and shared stories of their incredible journey with the whole school. We are all inspired to set and achieve goals no matter how large or small! Ryan and Rebecca have been raising money for 2 causes - Guide Dogs and the Amos Trust. Year 6(?) will be taking on a challenge of their own to help Ryan and Rebecca reach their goal of raising £1 for every mile pedalled. There is a collection jar in the Front Hall and further details of a collection day will follow... To read more about their journey you can visit their blog
