Maths

We aim to give each child a solid mathematical foundation on which to build so as to foster a love of and interest in Maths. We want our pupils to enjoy and feel confident about their mathematics and we have a clearly defined set of aims and objectives to achieve this.

We teach our pupils to use appropriate vocabulary and methods of representation to communicate mathematical ideas.

Our schemes of work are devised to include the Primary National Strategy for Mathematics which identifies seven strands of objectives:

  • Using and applying mathematics
  • Counting and understanding number
  • Knowing and using number facts
  • Calculating
  • Understanding shape
  • Measuring
  • Handling data

but is also extended to include the Common Entrance syllabus.

Activities undertaken by the pupils include practical work, oral and mental activities, concept building, skills development, problem solving, investigations, games and puzzles and calculator and computer use.

Our pupils are thoroughly prepared and confident to face the challenges of mathematics in their next school and beyond.
