Geography

The Geography Department provides the children with the opportunity and skills necessary to explore the physical world. Pupils develop an understanding of our environment and learn to compare it with contrasting locations.

Schemes of work are based on the National Curriculum. They are designed to allow children to develop a sense of place and to discover the physical and human features that give places their identity.

  • Case studies allow children to explore similarities and differences between places. Previous case study countries include the Caribbean (St. Lucia), Mexico, Kenya and India. These case studies are usually linked with Art, Music and Drama.
  • The children learn how to compare landscapes and investigate how geographical features have formed or changed.
  • Specific environmental issues are studied so the children develop a sense of responsibility for, and appreciation of, the world.
  • Mapping skills are developed progressively. All children in Upper School work on a Mapwork folder at their own pace.
  • In Years 5 and 6, field-work skills are developed by attending a week long residential field-trip. Year 6 also undertake independent project work based around a theme; planets, mountains, forests and endangered animals are examples of past themes.
An enquiry approach is central to all our geographical work.
