English

In order to foster a love of English, we devise exciting schemes of work that include the English National Curriculum but which also extend to cover the Common Entrance syllabus.

Activities include debating, public speaking assessments, drama and participating in writing workshops with visiting authors.

We encourage our pupils to become enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers. Not only do we aim to develop their ability to communicate very effectively in both speech and writing, but we also teach them to listen and respond intelligently.

Poetry appreciation is a priority, and past pupils have often won poetry competitions. Different types of comprehension exercises are practised frequently and creative writing is always varied and purposeful. This can cover anything from writing a script for a Podcast to children producing their first books. Past pupils have often had the pleasure of seeing their work published. We assess spelling, punctuation and grammar regularly, and promote neat, cursive handwriting and correct layouts. We encourage our pupils to use a wide range of vocabulary effectively, and we teach them how to carry out research successfully.

Pupils are thoroughly prepared so that they can confidently look forward to continuing English in their next schools.
