LearnING SUPPORT

The staff in the Learning Support Department ensure that children are able to access the broad, balanced and challenging curriculum that is taught at Rupert House. We work with the children to raise their self-esteem and expectations, as well as catering for their specific needs as they arise.
We want all the children to have a positive and exciting learning experience throughout their time at school. If any child is experiencing difficulties, the Learning Support Team is there to give help, support and advice to children, staff and parents.
Our aim is to give children the confidence to work independently in the classroom with their peers.
Our children do not all learn in the same way and at the same pace. In the Learning Support department we encourage children to take control of their own learning, understand their own learning style, express their concerns and be aware of their own needs. We give praise when the children develop strategies to help themselves and we view mistakes as an opportunity to learn and improve.
During the school day children may be supported in the classroom or withdrawn in small groups or individually to learn in a quiet, friendly environment with staff trained to understand their needs.
Some children go to Early Birds, a club which encourages children to improve their motor skills, listening and organisational skills whilst having fun.
Buddy Reading enables children to read together in quiet, supportive surroundings.
Jackanory Club enables children to listen to classic stories at lunchtimes in the Spring Term when the weather outside is cold.
The Busy Bee room is at the heart of learning support. It is well stocked with games and equipment which are used to give variety to learning throughout the school.
Parents are always welcome and are encouraged to become involved with their child’s learning. The SENCo is available to discuss triumphs or troubles at any time and at all Parents’ Evenings.
