We aim to make History fascinating and exciting! Our lively schemes of work, although based on the National Curriculum, also extend to cover much of the Common Entrance syllabus, and include interesting topics such as the Normans, the Stuarts and our own local history. (Rupert House is, after all, named after Prince Rupert, the cavalry leader in the English Civil War.)
In the Upper School we believe it is important to teach History in chronological order. We encourage children to appreciate the past, to question the reliability of historical evidence, to interpret source material, to analyse material for the influence of bias, to understand why events happened, to carry out their own research and to demonstrate their knowledge about important issues in quizzes and assessments.
We hold entertaining interschool historical debates, we go on a wide variety of stimulating historical trips, we do dramatic re-enactments and we have even had Roman, Viking and Tudor visitors! Individual historical research is important, and past pupils have won commendations in national competitions. |
