| At Rupert House French is taught to all pupils in Years 1 to 6. The emphasis is on enjoyment with lively activities designed to develop a love of languages, good comprehension and confidence in speaking. The children learn a wide range of vocabulary through songs and games, listening, computer and whiteboard activities and role play. Reading and writing skills are developed alongside oral work, initially through solving puzzles and labelling pictures and gradually extending into description and dialogue. During their final year the Year 6 girls write and illustrate story books in French and read them to the Year 2 children during the Summer Term. On Open Mornings the French Room is transformed into a café with charming Year 4 waitresses serving coffee and croissants. The French Room is always full of posters that display the pupils’ artistic and IT skills as well as their knowledge of French. All the topics recommended by the National Curriculum for French at Key Stage 2 are covered. During the Spring and Summer terms of Year 6 the girls also have a chance to experience a second language as they learn how to introduce themselves, talk about food and school and describe their families and pets in Spanish. |
